I enjoyed the way Simner combined post-apocalyptic/dystopian elements with a heavy dose of magic in this young adult novel.  I've got the sequel, Faerie Winter, on hold at the library and look forward to it!

A permanent expression of doom in her eyes.  Brutish abused Poor's neediness, but also watched out for her.  Or so it seemed.

This was a good book.  I have a couple of friends who have volunteered in the county jail and my brother is currently in prison.  So reading about a (formerly Orthodox) Harvard grad who finds himself working as a prison librarian in Boston felt fairly relevant to me.  He had a good mixture of heart-rending parts and laugh-producing parts. 

Lots of crazy tomorrow

Tomorrow Jeremy and I have our final divorce mediation session in the morning and in the late afternoon I have a job interview.  I'm hoping to be able to see some apartments as well at some point, but I'm not sure yet how it is all going to play out.  When I get home in the evening, my housemates should be back from their week and a half vacation -- sadly, they didn't get to see the space shuttle launch, but it sounds like they had a good time anyway. 

My brain is full of lots of thoughts and ideas and fears and possibilities.  For now, I'm off to read with Fiona and try to sleep.

My word comes from Remembeing Hypatia by Brian Trent:

Marvering: the process of rolling hot glass on a metal surface to add a skin of cool semi-solid glass that allows control over the rate at which a bubble within the glass expands. [from The Free Dictionary]

About the book:  

 
Remembering Hypatia is my book club book for May.  It is historical fiction centered around the Alexandria Library and one of its teachers, Hypatia, a philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician.  I didn't love it at first and it's poorly edited (typos and poor word choice, not over-arching theme kind of stuff) but at the end I found myself caring about the characters and saddened at what a few obsessed and angry people can destroy.  I'm glad I read it, if only to know more about an amazing woman who really existed.

page 1, The Case of the Gypsy Good-bye by Nancy Springer

This is the sixth in the Enola Holmes (the much younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft) series.  I've read the others, but this is the first I've read with my seven-year-old.  I usually like the storyline and characters, but am always taken slightly aback at the occasional reference to "ladies of the night" or similar things.  Fiona enjoyed this one and is ready to go back and read the rest of the series. 

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

So Marc and Angel Hack Life had a blog post recently that asked 365 "thought-provoking questions".  I've picked some of the ones that stood out to me and hope to occasionally use them as writing prompts.

 How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

I'm a book-loving, people-loving,laughter-desiring, optimistic mother who is periodically impatient or angry or too sure I'm right, but who tries, almost every day, to grow, to be less of a train-wreck, to be authentic, and to be accepting -- of life, of myself, and of others.


This was a tough one and I just made myself go with my (more or less) first thoughts.  So maybe we'll call this one a work-in-progress or rough draft of my "one sentence".

Outside my window... Sunny and the wind has chilled out.

I am thinking... about too many things at once!

I am thankful for... the gift, from a long lost friend, of a year's subscription to Pandora.

From the learning rooms . . . more resume and job-hunting kind of stuff -- learn something new all the time!


I am wearing...comfy jeans and a dark pink tank top -- perfect scrap-booking wear!

I am creating... more scrapbook pages of Fiona's birth -- She's glad to actually start seeing pictures of herself in my books.  :)

I am going... to need to get out of the house tomorrow while the cleaners are here.

I am reading... Running the Books:  The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian by Avi Steinberg


I am hearing... "Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae on my Pandora Quick Mix (Thanks to Crystal!!) A very fun and cheerful song.

Around the house... our four housemates are gone til Friday so it's a quiet house.

One of my favorite things... the mango, avocado, red onion & cilantro salsa my friend Leisl just made!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Send a job app to Barnes and Noble, write Fio's birthday letter, final mediation session for our divorce, and spend some time outside.
