He laughed rather ruefully as he described how he had discovered a very rare species of fern in an inaccessible place, and in his efforts to obtain it had lost his footing, and slipped ignominiously into a neighboring pond.

Just starting reading this one with my daughter -- the first in the Poirot series and, I believe, Christie's first book.  We are still learning about the characters and their relationships to each other.  It's a little tricky for Fiona to keep them all straight, especially because different names are used for the same character -- Evie, Evelyn, Miss Howard, etc.  But I'm thinking when we get farther in, we'll get better oriented!
