Book Beginnings -- The Roar by Emma Clayton

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence.

I read The Roar by Emma Clayton for Tattooed Books' YALSA Challenge.   First sentence:

The sun was setting over the Atlantic, and as it ran like molten gold into the waves a girl in a Pod Fighter ripped through the scene like graffiti sprayed across a landscape painting.

I just didn't love this book.  It's 481 pages and I found myself plodding through it.    I don't even think I'll pick up the next one in the series, assuming there is one -- and that is rare for me, to not continue with a series. Have others read this and had a different experience?

  1. I haven't read this but I can't say I care much for that line. It sounds as though the author is trying too hard to be descriptive.

  2. What a shame you didn't enjoy it :-( Better luck with the next book

  3. I agree with Cat. Though the image the sentence conjures up is a good one, it takes too many words to say it. Here's my BB. I hadn't heard of this author before. Hope you like the next book you read! Here's my BB.

  4. I think Cat and Lady Q are right -- perhaps that was a bit of my struggle with the book.

Becky, I'm enjoying my Wilkie Collins novellas much more. :)

Lady Q, I'm off to visit yours.
