A More-Than-Slightly Pilfered Book Meme

I slightly pilfered this meme from Bryan at Bryan's Book Blog who appropriated it from Susan at Well-Mannered Frivolity who (according to her) got it from “Ryan at Wordsmithonia, who borrowed it from Alexia's Books and Such..., who borrowed it from Brooke Reviews, and well, you get the idea.”  I've also given myself the liberty to cut a few of the questions because they were hard -- I know, very wimpy of me.  Please assume that none of my answers have been accepted into the canon as of yet.

The Rules:
No two answers can be the same book
All books must be fiction

Book Next to Your Bed Right Now:Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party -- What all responsible parents read to their six-year-old daughter at night.

Favorite Series:
Lately I've been especially lovin' on Suzanne Collins Hunger Games trilogy.  (the last one comes out in August)
Book/Series You Would Take With You on a Long Flight:Maybe The Time Traveler's Wife, as I could use a re-read.

Book That Everyone Should Be Made to Read in School:
1984 by George Orwell because, even though I didn't get as much out of it in high school as I did as an adult, it's something that is referenced so often and I'm glad I at least sort of got it.

Book That Everyone Should Be Made to Read, Period:

Still Alice by Lisa Genova.  (I'm pretty sure I'd have a totally different answer if non-fiction was included.)

Favorite Character:Tie between Harriet the Spy and Miss Marple

Best Villain:  This is the one I've left til last. I think I'm going to go with Draco Malfoy -- I'm attracted to seeing the motivation behind a character's actions and I think we get some of that with Draco.

Favorite Concept Series:
Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series -- I originally had this in favorite series but I think it fits better here....

Favorite Invented World: Gone-Away Lake...  I'm sure there's another one, but Gone-Away is all I can think of right now.

Most Beautifully-Written Book: The Barn Owls by Tony Johnston and Deborah Kogan Ray

Funniest Book:  Couplehood and/or Parenthood by Paul Reiser  -- one of those books where you laugh because it's all so true.

  1. Book Next to Your Bed Right Now:I have to pick just one of them? Lord John and the Private Matter by Diana Gabaldon. Since I read the entire Outlander Series I want to read complete the set. I am not enjoying at as much as I had hoped.

Favorite Series: Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris

Book/Series You Would Take With You on a Long Flight: Right now, if I had the time, I would like to re-read the Thursday Next Series by Jasper Fforde.

Book That Everyone Should Be Made to Read in School: Chaucer's Canterbury Tales because I think it shows that "old stuff" can be pretty funny and worthwhile to read.

Book That Everyone Should Be Made to Read, Period: The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell

Favorite Character: I have to pick just one? Mr. Darcy based on Austin's novel and some of the alternative fictions that have been written.

Best Villain: Ian Wharton in My Idea of Fun by Will Self. He is irredeemable.

Favorite Concept Series: Ender Series by Orson Scott Card

    Favorite Invented World: Harry Potter

Most Beautifully-Written Book: Blindness by Jose Saramago It isn't "beautiful" but it was the most intense and memorable writing style I have ever read.

Funniest Book: Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott. Though I think I might come up with another one.

  2. Regarding your list Buffy, I must say that I don't see Draco as a villain... you think he is?

  3. Cathy, I think he is viewed by the other characters as a villain and then there's the whole murder of you-know-who, well actually not you-know-who, but no one wants a spoiler. :)

But I think that's what I like about him, is that he's not portrayed as sheer evil... Of course, everyone once in a while, when thinking about HP I wonder how much fan fic is affecting my impressions. :)

  6. Kelly, I really enjoyed it. I don't know if you remember when I reviewed it, but it's about a woman with early onset Alzheimer's.

  7. I totally agree with your funniest books! We are getting ready to move (again!) and I have been purging...even books:( But those two I had to keep because they are SO funny.

  8. Right, Bear?! Now that I work with cloth diapers so much, the part where he talks about how the main thing that changed after his baby was born was the level of moisture -- that comes up a lot. :)
